Definition
Tribe belonging is the deep human need to remain a member in good standing of the group that supplies meaning, safety, and identity. The drive is older than the cortex and stronger than reasoning — for most of human history, being cast out was equivalent to dying.
In habit terms, belonging is the silent partner of every behavior. A habit aligned with the tribe runs effortlessly; a habit that breaks tribal norms is fought not only by the world but by the practitioners own social instincts.

How it works
Belonging registers in the brain through the same circuits that monitor physical safety. Inclusion produces calm and confidence; exclusion produces something close to physical pain. Behaviors that mark inclusion (showing up, dressing the part, using the in-group vocabulary) are rewarded instantly with social warmth, and the reward is potent enough to overrule abstract long-term costs.
Habit design that takes belonging seriously stops asking how do I force this behavior? and starts asking which tribe already does it, and how do I become one of them? Joining is upstream of performing. Once inside, the behavior is supported by every interaction; the practitioner is no longer producing the habit, the tribe is.
