The subconscious mind, in self-improvement literature, is the non-conscious layer of mental activity that stores beliefs, memories, and habits and influences behavior without deliberate, moment-to-moment attention. It contrasts with the conscious mind, which handles focused reasoning.
The recurring claim is that much of what a person does flows from this layer rather than from conscious choice. Self-image, automatic reactions, and ingrained expectations all reside there, which makes the subconscious a target for deliberate self-development.
