Self-confidence in Parrish's framework is not the public bravado we usually associate with the word — it is internal stability. A person with genuine self-confidence does not need other people to confirm their worth, which means they can absorb information that threatens their self-image without flinching.
It is the third of his four strengths and the direct counterweight to the ego default. The more secure the self, the less defending it requires; the less defending it requires, the more truth can land.
The distinction worth marking: arrogance is loud self-confidence that requires constant reinforcement. Real self-confidence is quiet — it does not need to win arguments.

In leaders who change their minds publicly without losing authority. In experts who say 'I don't know' as easily as 'I do'. In collaborators who introduce people more capable than them into the room. In the absence of the small status-defending behaviours that the ego default produces by default.
Parrish's prescription is to build it bottom-up: keep small promises to yourself, accumulate honest evidence of your capacity over time, and resist the temptation to fill gaps with performance. Real self-confidence is what is left when you stop pretending.
