Definition
Purpose is the felt sense that what you are doing matters and that it points somewhere. It does not require a grand mission; it requires a clear answer to "why am I doing this, today, in this form." Maltz argued that a working sense of purpose is not optional decoration — it is a structural input the nervous system needs in order to organise effort.
The concept is operational, not philosophical. A person with a clear purpose recovers faster from setbacks, makes cleaner trade-offs, and sustains effort longer. A person without one tends to drift, even when capable.

Purpose works as a sustained orientation rather than a single decision. It shapes attention (you notice what is relevant), motivation (you tolerate harder work for it), and recovery (setbacks read as detours, not endings). Maltz noticed in his clinical work that patients who could state a clear forward purpose recovered better from surgery and lived longer in retirement than otherwise-comparable patients who could not.
The practice is to keep purpose articulated and visible. Re-state it in your own words; check current actions against it weekly; revise it when life changes. Without articulation it tends to fade into vague restlessness; with articulation, it becomes a structural feature of how you spend attention.
