Definition

Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behavior. It asks how people perceive the world around them, how they form memories and beliefs, why they feel what they feel, how they make decisions, what shapes personality, and how mental disorders arise and can be treated. The field spans an enormous range: from the millisecond-scale firing of neurons to the years-long developmental trajectory of a child, from the individual lying on a therapist's couch to the dynamics of a crowd.

Unlike philosophy, which reasons about the mind from first principles, psychology demands evidence. Psychologists design experiments, run longitudinal studies, analyze behavioral data, and increasingly integrate neuroscience and genetics to understand the biological substrates of mental life. Unlike folk psychology — the everyday intuitions people hold about why others act as they do — scientific psychology repeatedly discovers that commonsense explanations are incomplete, biased, or simply wrong. The gap between intuition and evidence is itself one of psychology's most important findings.

Psychology divides into major subfields: cognitive psychology studies perception, attention, memory, and reasoning; developmental psychology tracks how minds grow and change across the lifespan; social psychology investigates how other people and situations shape individual behavior; clinical psychology diagnoses and treats mental disorders; biological psychology examines the brain mechanisms underlying behavior; and personality psychology studies stable individual differences in how people think, feel, and act. These subfields are distinct in method and focus but perpetually inform each other — no single level of analysis captures the full picture.

The experimental method and its limits

Psychology's primary tool is the controlled experiment: hold everything constant except the variable of interest, randomly assign participants to conditions, and measure the outcome. The logic is powerful — randomization eliminates most confounds, and comparison across conditions reveals causal effects that correlational studies cannot. Classic experiments in social psychology demonstrated that ordinary people would administer what they believed to be dangerous electric shocks under authority pressure, or fail to help a victim when other bystanders were present. These findings overturned assumptions about the power of individual character.

The method has limits. Many classic findings have proved difficult to replicate at scale, exposing problems with small samples, publication bias, and culturally narrow participant pools. Modern psychology has responded with pre-registration of hypotheses, larger replication efforts, and more diverse samples — a methodological reckoning that has made the field more rigorous but also more cautious about sweeping generalizations.

Levels of explanation

A complete psychological account operates at multiple levels simultaneously. At the biological level: which neural circuits, neurotransmitters, and genetic variants are involved? At the cognitive level: what representations, processes, and heuristics generate the behavior? At the social level: how do other people, culture, and situation shape the response? At the developmental level: how did this pattern emerge over time? These levels are not competing explanations but complementary ones — a neurotransmitter story and a childhood-attachment story can both be true and important for the same phenomenon. Psychology at its best integrates across levels rather than privileging any single one.

Where it goes next

Psychology connects outward to cognitive science (which adds computation and linguistics to the picture), to philosophy of mind (which asks what mental states fundamentally are), and to the applied domains of clinical practice, behavioral economics, organizational design, and public health. The boundary between psychology and biology blurs progressively as neuroscience matures; the boundary between psychology and sociology blurs wherever individual minds encounter social structures. Both expansions are productive.
