Definition

Prudence is the strategic disposition that prefers a postponed engagement to an early one, an unfought victory to a costly one, and quiet position-building to dramatic gesture. Sun Tzu treats it as the cardinal virtue of generalship — more important than courage, more reliable than cleverness, harder to cultivate than either.

The prudent commander is not timid. They will commit decisively when the conditions favor it. What they refuse is the temptation to commit when the conditions do not — out of pride, impatience, or the wish to appear vigorous.

Sun Tzu writes that the supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting. This is not pacifism; it is economics. Every battle costs lives, supplies, time, and political capital that cannot be recovered. A general who can secure the objective by maneuver, by reputation, by patience, or by negotiation has converted the same outcome at a fraction of the price.

The disposition is built from three habits: refusing to confuse activity with progress, weighing irreversible costs more heavily than recoverable ones, and treating the opponent's possible mistakes as a real source of advantage rather than as a substitute for one's own preparation. Each habit takes years to become reliable because each one is unsatisfying in the short term.

In business and personal life prudence is the discipline of not pulling the trigger on the deal that almost makes sense, the launch that is almost ready, the response that is almost the right one. The prudent operator earns less in a peak year than the bold one and significantly more across a decade.
