The prodigal return is the temporary visit a migrant makes back to their hometown — usually framed as a celebration of how far they have come, sometimes as a private reckoning with what they left.
The name borrows from the biblical parable but inverts its mood: in the original parable, the prodigal returns broke and ashamed; in the migration context, the prodigal returns visibly successful, in a new car, with new clothes, bearing gifts. The visit is one of the most-studied moments in migration sociology because it concentrates the migrant's two identities — origin and destination — in a single weekend. It is also one of the most-photographed, most-storied, and most-remembered events in many migrant families.

The return visit is choreographed by an implicit script that varies in detail but holds in outline across many migrations. The migrant arrives with visible markers — a car bought new, a wardrobe of city clothes, a suitcase of gifts. The visit is timed to a public occasion: a holiday, a homecoming, a family reunion. The migrant pays for things — a meal at the diner, drinks at the pool hall, repairs on a relative's roof — and the payments are public. Stories from the destination are told and re-told, edited toward triumph. The migrant becomes, briefly, the most-discussed person in town.
What looks like simple display is doing several things at once. Status repair: the migrant, who left as ordinary and often as someone the town did not value, returns having out-earned and out-traveled almost everyone in it. Recruitment: younger relatives watch and decide whether to follow. Reciprocity: the gifts and payments balance, partially, the debt the migrant owes to family who supported the original departure. Self-confirmation: the visit closes the loop on the migration decision, providing evidence — to the migrant themselves — that the loss was worth the gain.
But the visit is also where the migrant's losses surface most acutely. The streets are smaller than they remembered. The cousins they were close to are strangers. Their accent is suddenly audible. The grandmother who would have hosted them is dead. The home they came to honor is not theirs anymore, and they will go back to a city where they are still not fully at home either. The prodigal return is celebratory on the surface and quietly painful underneath, and most migrant families understand both layers without naming them.
