Definition
Problem-reaction-solution describes a three-stage influence sequence in which an actor first creates or magnifies a problem, then waits for the predictable emotional reaction it produces, and finally offers a pre-planned solution that advances the actor's own agenda.
The manipulative twist is that the target never asked for the solution at the outset — they ask for it only after the engineered problem makes them feel afraid, angry, or helpless. Because the target believes the solution is their own idea, they accept changes they would otherwise have rejected.

In the problem stage the actor introduces a threat — real, exaggerated, or invented — and ensures the target is exposed to it. In the reaction stage the target's emotional response narrows their thinking; under stress, people prioritize relief over scrutiny. In the solution stage the actor presents an answer that looks like a rescue but quietly delivers what the actor wanted from the start.
The defense is to decouple the stages. Asking who introduced the problem, who profits from the solution, and whether the solution actually fits the threat breaks the emotional momentum the sequence depends on.
