How it works
The nervous system can only respond to current sensory input. When you pull attention forward into worst-case rehearsal or backward into could-have-done-better replay, you are still running the stress response — but on imagined material. The body cannot tell the difference, so it pays the metabolic cost without producing any of the useful work.
Maltz's countermeasure is simple: notice when attention has drifted, then return it to the next concrete act. Not the whole project, not the imagined outcome — the next motion, the next word, the next breath. Repeated, this becomes the habit of present-focused work, and the felt experience is one of energy returning to where it can actually be spent.
