The predator-prey dynamic describes an interpersonal pattern in which one party — the predator — approaches another not as an equal but as a target to be assessed, isolated, and exploited. Borrowed from ecology as a metaphor, it captures how manipulative individuals scan a social environment, single out the person most likely to comply, and steer the encounter toward their own advantage.
In dark psychology this framework explains the targeting phase of manipulation. Before any tactic is deployed, a manipulator decides whom to act on. The dynamic is therefore as much about selection as about technique: the wrong target resists, while a carefully chosen one supplies most of the manipulator's leverage simply by being susceptible.

How it works
Research on victim selection has shown that observers can identify likely targets from posture and gait alone, judging unfamiliar people as vulnerable in seconds. A manipulator extends this by probing — small requests, minor boundary tests, conversational hooks — and watching how the other person responds. Compliance with a small ask invites a larger one; a firm refusal often ends the pursuit.
Isolation is the dynamic's signature move. By separating a target from friends, alternative perspectives, or escape routes, the predator removes the checks that would otherwise expose the tactics. The strongest counter is to keep those checks in place: stay connected, name the testing behavior when you notice it, and treat any pressure to cut off others as a warning sign rather than a sign of devotion.
