Persistence is the capacity to keep acting toward a goal across time, especially when progress is slow, results are absent, or obstacles mount. It is effort sustained past the point where most people stop.
Where motivation supplies the initial push, persistence supplies continuation. It is what carries a plan through the long, unrewarding middle stretch between starting and succeeding — the stretch in which most attempts are abandoned.

Persistence rests on a few reinforcing supports: a clearly defined goal worth the cost, a definite plan that names the next action, a habit of treating defeat as feedback rather than a verdict, and ideally a supportive group that steadies resolve. Together these make continuation easier than quitting.
The practical mechanism is reframing. The persistent person interprets a setback as a signal to revise the approach, not as proof the goal is impossible. Because effort continues, more attempts are made; because more attempts are made, the probability of eventually finding a working path rises sharply. Persistence is less a feeling than a trained, repeated decision.
