Definition
Performance of success is the migrant's ritualized display of arrival — the new car driven home for the summer visit, the pressed suit at the family reunion, the gold tooth, the freshly minted dollar bill in the church plate, the gift-laden suitcase.
It is a signal, simultaneously, to the people back home, to the rivals who stayed behind, to the doubting elders who warned the trip was a mistake, and — most importantly — to the migrant themselves. The display says: the gamble paid off, the choice was right, the years of separation produced something to show.

How it works
A migrant's summer visit home is not a normal vacation. It is a one-week public referendum on the migration. Every cousin, every neighbor, every old skeptic is going to see what you arrived as, and read it carefully. The car you drive into the yard, the clothes you wear to church on Sunday, the gifts you brought for the children, the size of the bill you press into the pastor's hand — each is an observable proof. Together they say: the move worked.
This is why the visit is loaded up with goods that, in normal life at the destination, the migrant could not afford. The car was financed at a rate that hurts; the suit was bought on credit; the gifts came out of a savings account that took a year to fill. None of that is visible at home. What is visible is the polished hood ornament, the pressed lapel, and the calm with which the migrant declines a third helping at dinner. The performance is the point.
The Great Migration produced a particularly rich version of this dynamic because the geographic distance was great enough that visits were rare and visible. A migrant in Chicago who came home to Mississippi every summer for two weeks compressed twelve months of self-narrative into a fortnight of display. The Cadillac parked in the front yard of a sharecropper's cabin became one of the iconic images of the migration generation. The image was not, on close inspection, a description of monthly cash flow. It was a description of accumulated meaning.
The function extends in both directions. The migrant needs the performance for themselves: years of difficult adjustment at the destination acquire retroactive justification when measured against the visible reaction at home. The home community needs the performance to update its information: which destinations are paying off, which routes are working, which kin are succeeding. The next wave of would-be migrants is watching closely.
The cost of the performance is real and frequently borne in silence. The destination life that produced the visible Cadillac was often crowded, exhausting, and racially constrained in ways the home audience never saw. The migrant carried that gap home alongside the gifts, and back north alongside the empty suitcase.
