Intentional Living

Definition

Intentional living means directing one's days according to chosen values rather than letting them be decided by impulse, habit, or whatever happens to arrive. It is the practical outcome of the Stoic commitment to live in accordance with reason.

The Stoics were sharply aware of how easily life passes unexamined. Seneca warned that people are careless with time in a way they would never be with money, spending it without noticing where it goes.

Why it matters

How it works

Intentional living is built from a few recurring practices. The morning sets an aim and rehearses likely challenges. Throughout the day, the mind tests its impressions before acting on them. The evening reviews whether conduct matched intention.

Underlying all of it is the dichotomy of control: intention is directed at what is actually in one's power — judgments, choices, effort — rather than at outcomes that fortune decides. This keeps intentional living focused and free of frustration.
