In physics, inertia is the property by which an object at rest stays at rest, and an object in motion stays in motion, unless acted on by an outside force. Mass measures inertia: the heavier something is, the harder it is to start, stop, or redirect.
As a mental model, inertia explains why habits, organizations, and beliefs persist. Whatever a system is currently doing, it will keep doing — not out of intent, but because changing direction requires a force large enough to overcome the resistance.

Inertia is not friction; it is the resistance to any change in state. Starting a stationary object takes a sustained force, and stopping a moving one takes an equal effort in the opposite direction. The greater the mass, the greater the force or the longer the time needed.
The practical use is twofold. To change a stuck system, supply a concentrated force rather than a steady trickle. To sustain progress, build momentum so inertia carries you — once a habit or initiative is moving, it tends to keep moving. Inertia is an obstacle at the start and a gift afterward.
