Definition

The Goldilocks rule is Clear's name for the principle that peak motivation occurs when a task is just barely beyond your current ability — not too easy, not too hard. The sweet spot is what makes practice feel engaging instead of either dull or crushing.

The label echoes the porridge in the fairy tale: not too hot, not too cold, but just right. Applied to habits, it's the difficulty calibration that keeps a long practice sustainable.

The Goldilocks rule sits at the intersection of motivation research, flow theory, and skill-development practice. Csíkszentmihályi found that engagement peaks when challenge matches skill; below that line, attention wanders to boredom, above it to anxiety. The rule operationalizes the finding: keep your practice intentionally near the upper edge of what you can do.

Practically, this means progressive difficulty in any habit worth keeping. A runner trains slightly harder routes; a musician practices pieces just past current technique; a writer takes on subjects that stretch craft. The increment matters — too small and the work stagnates, too large and it overwhelms. Clear's rough heuristic is a few percent harder each session.

The rule also explains why habits decay even when maintained. A practice that started as challenging becomes routine, then easy, then boring. Without periodic recalibration upward, motivation drains and the habit becomes mere going-through-the-motions. The fix is to revisit the difficulty knob every few weeks: am I still working at the edge, or have I drifted to the comfortable middle?
