Globalism

Definition

Globalism is an outlook, and a related set of policies, that emphasizes the interconnection of the world's economies, societies, and political systems. It treats many problems and opportunities as global in scope and favors cooperation that crosses national borders.

Globalism is closely related to globalization but is more explicitly a perspective and value-orientation: globalization describes the process of integration, while globalism is the worldview that embraces it.

Why it matters

How it works

Globalism operates through networks and institutions that link nations together — trade agreements, international organizations, treaties, and cross-border markets. Its central claim is that interdependence is both a reality and, managed well, a benefit: cooperation can raise prosperity and manage shared risks. Critics counter that globalism can erode national sovereignty, expose local communities to disruption, and concentrate decisions in distant bodies. The ongoing debate between globalist and nationalist perspectives is a defining tension of the modern world.
