Definition
The frontal cortex is the front-most region of the brain and the seat of what neuroscientists call executive function — planning, working toward goals, weighing consequences, and overriding impulses. Its prefrontal portion is where the brain does the hard, effortful thing rather than the easy, automatic one.
In Behave it plays a recurring role as the brain's adult in the room: the region that delays gratification, considers others, and restrains the amygdala. It is also, tellingly, the most evolutionarily recent part of the human brain and the slowest to mature.

How it works
The frontal cortex sits atop the rest of the brain as a top-down regulator. It receives input from emotional and reward circuits and decides whether to act on them or hold back. When you resist an insult, stick to a plan, or factor in someone else's perspective, the frontal cortex is doing metabolically expensive work — which is why willpower fades with fatigue, stress, and low blood sugar.
Its slow maturation is decisive. Because the region finishes wiring last, the environment a person grows up in has an extended window to shape it. That long construction period is why adolescence is turbulent and why the brain's capacity for judgment is as much a product of upbringing as of biology.
