Expansionism is a state policy or political drive aimed at extending a nation's territory, economic reach, or political influence beyond its existing borders. It can be pursued through conquest, colonization, settlement, or economic and cultural domination.
Expansionism is often justified by ideology — claims of destiny, civilizing mission, security, or access to resources — but at its core it is a project of accumulating power.

How it works
Expansionist states use military force, settlement, treaties, and economic leverage to absorb new territory and peoples. Success can generate a virtuous cycle in the short term: new lands provide resources, labor, and revenue that fund further expansion. But expansion also raises costs — longer frontiers to defend, diverse populations to govern, and rival powers provoked into resistance. When the burdens of holding distant territory exceed the gains, expansionism tips into overextension, setting the stage for stagnation or decline.
