Concept

Epidemic

Definition

An epidemic is the rapid and widespread outbreak of an infectious disease within a community or region, affecting many people in a short period. When an epidemic crosses continents and becomes global, it is called a pandemic.

In history, epidemics are not merely medical events. They are powerful drivers of demographic, economic, and political change, capable of reshaping civilizations within a single generation.

Why it matters

How it works

Epidemics spread fastest where people are densely settled and connected by trade and travel. The same routes that carry goods and ideas also carry pathogens, so periods of intense exchange often coincide with disease outbreaks. Populations with no prior exposure suffer especially high mortality. The aftermath can be transformative: severe death tolls have shifted the value of labor, weakened ruling elites, undermined religious authority, and even contributed to the decline of empires. Recovery often produces lasting structural change.
