Definition

Deregulation is the process of reducing or eliminating government rules that constrain how firms in an industry behave. These rules can govern prices, entry and exit, product standards, safety practices, or the structure of markets.

The case for deregulation rests on the idea that competition, rather than government oversight, is the most effective discipline on firms. By lowering barriers and removing restrictions, advocates argue, deregulation can spur innovation, cut prices, and improve service.

A deregulated industry typically sees new entrants, since the barriers that once protected incumbents are gone. Competition can drive down prices and encourage new business models. Airlines, telecommunications, and energy markets are common examples where deregulation reshaped pricing and service. The trade-off is that some rules exist to address genuine market failures, such as monopoly power, hidden risk, or harm to third parties. When such rules are removed, the benefits of competition can be offset by new dangers, a tension visible in financial markets where light regulation preceded major crises.
