Courtroom probability refers to the application — and frequent mis-application — of probability theory in legal proceedings. Forensic evidence (DNA matches, fibre comparisons, ballistic markings), epidemiological cause-of-injury arguments, and statistical assessments of guilt all involve probabilistic reasoning that judges and juries must evaluate.
The field is notorious for the gap between mathematical correctness and intuitive perception: judges, jurors, and even expert witnesses regularly conflate P(evidence | innocent) with P(innocent | evidence).

How it works
Forensic match probabilities are computed by laboratory analysts using population frequencies of specific DNA or other markers. The reported number is the probability that a random unrelated person would match the trace evidence. To get the probability of guilt given a match, one must combine this likelihood with a prior probability over potential suspects — exactly what Bayes' theorem does.
In practice, courts vary in how they allow probabilistic reasoning. Some jurisdictions ban explicit Bayesian arguments; others embrace them; most fall somewhere in between, requiring expert testimony to translate probabilities into language jurors can act on.
