Convivencia

Definition

Convivencia, a Spanish word meaning living together, refers to the centuries in medieval Iberia when Muslim, Christian, and Jewish communities shared the same lands and, to varying degrees, lived alongside one another. The term is used to describe the cultural exchange that flourished under both Muslim and, later, Christian rule.

Historians debate how harmonious this coexistence truly was. It included periods of cooperation and shared scholarship, but also episodes of restriction, conflict, and persecution.

Why it matters

How it works

Coexistence among faiths in the medieval world rested on legal arrangements and practical interest. Ruling powers granted minority communities protected but subordinate status, allowing them to practice their religion and govern internal affairs while paying special taxes. Shared cities, markets, and courts created daily contact and opportunities for exchange. Because this arrangement depended on the goodwill of rulers and on relative stability, it weakened whenever political pressure, war, or demands for religious uniformity intensified.
