Concentration

Definition

Concentration is the ability to gather scattered attention and hold it steadily on one thing. It is the mental equivalent of a lens focusing diffuse light into a single bright point: the same quantity of energy, narrowed, becomes far more powerful.

In the context of achievement, concentration is what allows a definite goal to receive sustained thought, planning, and effort. Without it, mental energy leaks across many half-formed aims and none of them gathers enough force to produce a result.

Why it matters

How it works

Concentration is built by repeatedly returning attention to a chosen object whenever it wanders, much like a muscle strengthened through resistance. A clear, definite goal makes this easier, because the mind has an obvious target to return to. Removing avoidable distractions, working in focused blocks, and attaching emotional importance to the task all deepen the hold. Over time the mind learns to stay on one thing long enough for genuine progress to accumulate.
