Definition
Adlerian psychology — named after Alfred Adler (1870–1937), the Viennese psychiatrist who founded Individual Psychology — holds that human behavior is best understood as goal-directed and future-oriented rather than driven by past causes. Where Freud looked backward (trauma, childhood, the unconscious), Adler looked forward: people act the way they do because of the purpose their behavior serves, not because of what happened to them.
Three ideas anchor the framework:
1. Teleological causality. Behavior is explained by its aim, not its origin. A person who claims anxiety prevents them from going outside is not caused to stay home by anxiety — they are using anxiety as a tool to achieve the goal of staying home (perhaps to avoid failure or rejection). This is a radical reframe: symptoms are instruments, not obstacles.
2. Inferiority and striving. All humans begin life small, dependent, and less capable than those around them. This universal experience of inferiority produces the drive to overcome it — to grow, to improve, to connect. Adler called this striving for superiority (or, later, striving for completion). Healthy striving moves toward contribution; neurotic striving moves toward domination or withdrawal.
3. Community feeling (Gemeinschaftsgefühl). The goal of healthy psychological development is community feeling — the sense that one belongs to something larger than oneself, that one's actions matter to others, and that one has something to contribute. Without community feeling, striving for superiority turns destructive. With it, self-interest and social interest align.
Why it matters
Task separation: the practical core
One of Adler's most actionable ideas is task separation: the discipline of distinguishing whose task a given situation belongs to, and refusing to invade others' tasks or allow others to invade yours. Whose task is it to decide how your adult child lives? Theirs. Whose task is it to decide whether your colleague likes your work? Theirs. Whose task is it to choose how you act? Yours.
This simple discipline dissolves a large class of anxiety and conflict. Most interpersonal suffering is caused by either trying to control others' tasks or allowing others to control yours. Task separation is not indifference — it is respect.
