to pay too much; to pay unwillingly

Examples:

  • Bill had to shell out $100 for the tickets.
  • Every time I see him, I have to shell out some money for something. He never offers to pay.

Origin: We have an image that in the old days, sea shells were used as currency. When you shell out money you pay too much.
