A Permanent Revolution

Core idea
Modernity is not a revolution that happened and ended. It is a revolution that keeps happening — a state of permanent disruption in which the social arrangements, technologies, and ecological balances of one generation are reliably unrecognisable to the next. The Industrial Revolution did not simply add factories to an existing world; it dissolved the two oldest pillars of human life — the family and the local community — and replaced their functions with state and market. Meanwhile it embarked humanity on an ecological experiment without precedent, and without an off-switch.
The state-market substitution
For more than a million years, almost every human need — food, shelter, child-rearing, marriage, dispute resolution, old-age care, identity — was supplied by family and village. By 2000, in most of the world, those needs are supplied by a school system, a labour market, a pension fund, a court, and a hospital. The exchange is real: more freedom and less arbitrary cruelty, but also less continuity, less belonging, less buffer when the impersonal systems fail.
Why it matters
If modernity is permanent, there is no "post-modern stability" to wait for. Every generation must renegotiate identity, kinship, and meaning under conditions of accelerating change. And the ecological cost — destroyed habitats, species loss, climate disruption — is the externalised bill that the same revolution refuses to pay until forced.

For every major need in your life — food, friendship, health, learning, meaning, security — name which institution actually supplies it. If the answer is "the market" or "the state," ask what happens if that institution fails. If the answer is "family" or "community," notice that you are using an unusually rare provision in 2024.
Reading any "decline" narrative
When commentators lament the decline of family, religion, or community, they are usually pointing at a real shift — but they often mistake it for a cultural lapse when it is a structural one. The functions families used to perform have been outsourced, not abandoned.

Think about the journey of an elderly parent. In 1700, an ageing widow in a Yorkshire village was cared for by her sons, daughters-in-law, and neighbours, in the house she had lived in for decades. In 2024, the same widow is likely to live in her own flat, draw a pension administered by the state, receive home help arranged through a private agency, take medications prescribed by a national health service, and see her children on FaceTime. The widow of 2024 has more autonomy, more privacy, more medicine — and may be lonelier than any widow in human history. Both versions are real; the trade-off is also real.
